Like many of my generation, I first became interested in science fiction as a teenager when I saw Stanley Kubrick's epic film "2001: A Space Odyssey." In this 1968 blockbuster, a super computer called "HAL 9000" had a starring role and created some serious issues for the humans. Luckily, most of the actual computers developed subsequently have turned out to be far less problematic... at least, so far! Both computers and robots have come a long way since their early depiction in the movies and on TV. Ever-increasing automation is a fact of real life and now robotics has made a mark in the world of waste recycling, as I recently discovered during a visit to a facility in Finland.
