It's depressing that we cannot campaign for better recycling rates on the basis of the disastrous impact that our throw-away society is having on its own merits. However, as soon as the discourse turns to economic benefit then suddenly big business is interested. Still, we can have both - recycle more because it's better for the public purse, as well as the environment. Recent figures revealed that England's household waste recycling rate increased by a pathetic 0.3 percent between 2012/13 and 2013/14. Meanwhile, Wales is doing fantastically well. We have a 50 percent EU recycling target to meet by 2020 and it's not looking likely for England.
