Upcoming changes to legislation have the waste industry troubled - the revisions to the Waste Framework Directive set source-segregated collection methodologies as the default system for waste collectors, both private and local authorities. With many collectors operating a variance of the commingled recycling service, the current system in place must be justified, proving that a source-separated service for the four key materials (plastic, metals, paper and glass) is not necessary to facilitate high quality recycling, and not practicable in economic, environmental and technical considerations. The revisions came into UK law in January 2015, regulated by the Environment Agencies. The RouteMap, devised by a working group of key UK waste industry players, has provided the only form of assistance in interpreting the legislation, as Defra has not provided any formal guidance. The RouteMap sets out steps in how to go about understanding your requirements for legislative compliance, and has been noted in Environment Agency briefing notes to be considered "best practice".
