From food waste and unwanted furniture to plastic packaging and grass clippings, each person leaves around 403kg of waste for local authorities and their contractors to collect every year. Effective communication is key to the delivery of a successful resource management strategy, but with government departments and local authorities trying to reconcile recycling targets with funding cuts, preserving England's status as a green and pleasant land could become an increasingly difficult task.
