Sustainability has risen up the construction agenda over the past few years, and designers have a key role in helping to deliver projects that are sustainable in terms of their environmental, social and economic impacts. Waste and resource management is a key part of this, driven by the following factors: 1. the UK government's Strategy for Sustainable Construction setting a target of halving the amount of construction, demolition and excavation waste to landfill by 2012 compared to 2008 2. the now repealed Site Waste Management Plan Regulations are still considered to be good practice in the industry 3. the costs of transporting new materials to site and sending material to landfill continue to rise, with landfill tax for active waste increasing by £40 per tonne since 2009 4. many clients are now setting targets for waste reduction and reuse in construction contracts.
