In November 2013 an ex-colleague, friend and CIWM Fellow came banging on my door excitedly to explain about a project that the Midlands Centre of CIWM was involved with. He wanted to visit our organisation and paint a picture of what was to be a ground-breaking opportunity for UK waste management. The following month he easily sold the project to our senior management team and myself. In basic terms, CIWM had secured funding from the European Commission to send "real humans" from the UK waste management industry to work for two weeks in Denmark or Sweden to experience their ways of working. The project brief was for "on-site training and work experience to improve health, safety and environment performance for employees in the UK waste and resource management industry".
