While Veolia has been doing this for local authorities across England, ReCon Waste Management has been developing its own street sweepings and gully waste system in Northern Ireland. Set up in 2010 by Daniel Connolly, after identifying a gap in the market for the recycling of street sweeping and gully waste, the company designed a bespoke plant to wash and segregate the material, offering a recycling rate of up to 80 percent on waste which that was otherwise destined for landfill - a first for Northern Ireland. "We were able to produce clean, useful aggregates from the waste; one customer uses it to produce concrete gully pots - a true example of the circular economy in action," Daniel, a Chartered Waste Manager, told us.
