Defra minister, Dan Rogerson, launched this year's Clean Britain Awards, which has re-established itself as a "scheme" that offers a range of tools to help local authorities keep public areas clean and litter-free. When litter costs the taxpayer up to £850m a year and fast food litter has increased by 20 percent, the call to keep Britain clean has never been more urgent. The UK spends over £lbn a year on cleaning up the waste that is left behind in the areas where we live, work and play. Entering its 26th year, the 2015 Clean Britain Awards has now evolved into a two-tiered system. The first is the Clean Britain "Scheme", which is free to all local authorities and includes a monthly Clean Britain newsletter, as well as access to a communications toolkit to help engage with the public and promote their involvement.
