Regulation is one of the cornerstones of the waste and resource management industry, which has a complex remit to protect people and the environment by managing waste safely, while at the same time contributing to the wider climate change and resource efficiency agenda by putting waste back to work where it is appropriate to do so. In addition, the competitiveness of the legitimate waste industry is closely tied into satisfactory enforcement of the regulations, That is why the current Red Tape review for the waste sector is important and the key message that CIWM will be giving Defra in its response is that the legislation is not, in the main, the issue; what we need to focus on is making it work better.
