The quality of our local environment and the effort that goes in to maintaining it is something which is all to often under appreciated. The reality is that the presentation of the area in which we live contributes directly to our sense of wellbeing and civic pride, whilst also playing an important role in improving the economic prosperity of our towns, cities and rural districts. Ali Henderson from the business co-ordination office of Clean Britain Award "Gold Winners", Northumberland County Council, explained the importance of civic pride and how quickly it can be lost: "Consider a building with a few broken windows. If the windows are not repaired, the tendency is for vandals to break a few more windows. Eventually, they may even break into the building and, if it's unoccupied, perhaps become squatters or light fires inside. "The same theory can be applied to litter and fly-tipped waste: if an area is covered in litter or fly-tipping people will add to this. It may start off as a few fast food containers but if not cleared, bigger items will be tipped attracting vermin and creating an environment nobody wants. Adopting this approach to littered areas is at the heart of Northumberland County Council's street cleansing regime."
