Writing this column should be easy... I mean, I've got free licence to write what I want, unconstrained by subject. But that's the problem... what do I choose to write about given the vast choice of subjects? A look at the last few days (as I write this) on the CIWM Journal Online website gives me plenty of inspiration... and illegal waste shipments as a starting point. After having read Paula Baker's article, as you'll see for yourselves later in this issue, news of a further clamp-down on illegal waste shipments is most welcome. Without wishing to give away what Paula has to say [SPOILER ALERT] it seems ridiculous that we can be in a situation where there is a suspicious load sat, unopened and unchecked, at a port because the shipper won't foot the bill for the checks to be carried out, and the port won't do it unless the cost is covered.
