Our report, Waste Crime: Tackling Britain's Dirty Secret, authored by Eunomia to assess the economic impact of waste crime, was launched in the House of Commons this month. It was well received by the Resource Minister, Dan Rogerson MR who reiterated that Defra was NOT moving away from its waste portfolio, and it found that waste crime was costing the UK economy in the region of £600m a year, and could potentially be costing more than £800m. The scale of waste crime in the UK is (unfortunately) widespread, and we should not underestimate its impact. Whilst fly-tipping makes up part of the problem, we're not just talking about a builder saving a few pounds by fly-tipping rubble in a local field. We're looking at illegal waste sites operating on a huge scale, processing thousands of tonnes of waste, as well as seemingly legitimate operators misclassifying waste in order to evade a tax bill that could total several millions of pounds.
