The Isle of Wight NHS Trust is unique, as it is the only integrated acute, ambulance, mental health and community Trust in England. The Trust has over 2900 staff and operates from St Mary's Hospital in Newport, as well as 20 community sites across the island. Waste logistics on the island can be challenging, with very limited treatment and processing capability available, resulting in large volumes of waste being shipped to the mainland on what is known as the most expensive ferry crossing in the UK. An acute hospital produces probably one of the most diverse range of waste streams possible. At the last count, the Trust generates and segregates 15 distinct clinical waste streams (315 tonnes per year) and over 20 domestic waste streams (circa 570 tonnes per year).
