UCL's waste contractor, Bywaters, uses London's riverside wharf for the direct disposal of waste, with all non-recycling material being sent - by barge - to the energy from waste facility at Belvedere. However, in terms of reducing or eliminating waste, UCL sources sustainable furniture, it has a sustainable procurement policy and has developed a cataloguing system called Quartzy, across the chemistry department, to manage and locate chemicals and facilitate equipment booking to prevent buying and throwing away the same chemical in different parts of the department, which now includes 20,000 bottles! This year, UCL is also launching a new recycling and waste component to its "Student Switch Off" scheme in student halls, offering prizes to incentivise energy savings and for correctly using the waste facilities provided.
