The Confederation of European Waste to Energy Plants (CEWEP) represents energy from waste (EfW) facilities from 17 EU countries (and the USA), making up 84 percent of the capacity of Europe. The congress, coinciding with its 10th anniversary, was held in Wiirzburg, where CEWEP was founded. Attendees ranged from policy writers and decision-makers within the EU, to professionals within the waste to energy industry. The focus of the congress was energy and resource efficiency, with an excellent range of speakers presenting and discussing interesting and pertinent topics. The congress began with a welcome from the CEWEP deputy president, Hakan Rylander of Avfall Sverige, giving introductions, a background to CEWEP and an overview of the themes and topics. This was followed by an opening address from the Mayor of Wiirzburg, George Rosenthal. Wiirzburg has a recycling rate of 60 percent with an EfW facility providing 85 percent of heat and power for district heating, and it is looking to expand the district cooling network from its university and hospitals to residential areas.
