The Coalition Government has withdrawn outline PFI funding for three major waste projects (all including thermal recovery), having deciding they are not needed to meet 2020 landfill diversion targets. But rather than this somewhat piecemeal approach to capacity, there is a need for much more strategic national focus where securing future UK energy supply is concerned, to enable the full energy potential of residual waste to be exploited via heat networks. Highly efficient multi-fuelled merchant energy from waste (EfW) infrastructure, whilst not a panacea, could play a significant role in meeting our future energy needs. The challenges to doing so are not technical, but include historical policy inertia (surrounding energy efficiency) and highly polarised views surrounding the EU's Waste Hierarchy.
