Before we get too far into this story, I need to "declare an interest". I was offered disproportionate hospitality prior to writing this story. Yes, I can tell you're shocked. Professionals in my position have to be constantly on guard about such things, but I'm sorry to say, I succumbed. All I can say in mitigation is, if you'd tasted one of Mrs Doherty's scones with your morning brew, I'm pretty sure you'd have weakened too... they are amazing!
