At last, JCB has put its own six-cylinder "Dieselmax"engine into production. Although the notion of "own brand" JCB power units evolved when archrival, the Caterpillar Corporation, purchased Perkins (the key supplier of power units to JCB), it took until 2004 before the first four-cylinder JCB diesels rolled off the production line. Right from the start, a six-cylinder version was planned (to replace the Isuzu-sourced units in the JS excavator range, for example), but as not even JCB was immune from the banking crisis, the larger engines were never introduced. Until now, that is.
