Defra has released the fly-tipping statistics for England, showing local authorities dealt with almost 800 000 incidents in 2011/12. According to Defra the report of fly-tipping incidents in 2011/12 dropped by nine percent compared to the previous year. Almost two-thirds of this was household waste and almost 43 percent of fly-tipping occurred on the motorway, according to the report. The estimated cost of clearance of fly-tipping to local authorities was revealed at £37.4m, about nine percent reduction over 2010/11. 490 000 enforcement actions were estimated at a cost of £17.7m, a 14 percent decrease in actions over 2010/11, according to the stats, of which 99.6 percent resulted in conviction.
