This article has been written in the light of our recent experiences in advising on healthcare waste management, where it seems that significant confusion exists when it comes to classifying such wastes. Many factors contribute to this confusion but, here, we focus on those related to definitions. We consider the terms "clinical", "healthcare" and "hazardous" waste and the confusion that arises because of the overlap between them. Having more than one term for the same waste type can lead to conflicting classifications and often makes coding for the purposes of duty of care transfer notes and hazardous waste consignment notes very difficult. We also offer a possible solution and hope that in so doing, we will encourage productive debate.
