A company has been fined half a million pounds after a worker died after falling into a channel carrying 1500℃ slag waste. Steel company, Tata (which was operating at the time as Corns), received the fine as the covers to the channel had been removed for maintenance, but had not been replaced. Steam from a granulator was said to have affected visibility, causing the man to fall into the uncovered area. A Health & Safety Executive report showed that the company had a reporting system that showed "a significant number of near misses" due to steam.
