When the Coalition Government came into power and declared that it would reduce the regulatory burden on industry, hopes of a long awaited renaissance in this important area of business cost rose. The Chancellor, George Osborne, followed up by declaring that new regulation would be on the basis of "one in-one out." The Department for Culture, Media and Sport set up the Tourism Task Force under the chairmanship of Alan Parker CBE, president of the British Hospitality Association, and it has produced a report, Smart Regulation and Economic Growth: Seizing the Tourism Opportunity, which includes 80 proposals for reducing the regulatory burden on the sector. Several questions relating to regulation and policy arise when considering waste.
