Dear Editor, I read with interest the Brave New World article on localism by Dr Paul Harvey: it certainly highlighted the possibilities in store for localised waste management "companies" in the future. As I see it, the Localism Bill would give a community the right to manage part, if not all, of the waste management for themselves. This is an issue dear to my heart as it is a model I have introduced in my work in North Africa, and it works well (see the article in the August 2008 issue, page 42). My guiding principles are that waste should be segregated and treated at source, then sold locally. As it said in Dr Harvey's article, let the councils and communities do their own thing and shape the development of their communities.
