Our industry operates largely unseen at the heart of communities, and recycling and waste are increasingly common topics of conversation and debate. It is, however, our positive contributions to those communities, to the economy and to the wider environment that often remain unnoticed or unmentioned. Our sector employs over 142 000 people, generates a turnover of £11 bn and produces 1.5 percent of the UK's total electricity supply every year - not to mention the 200000 tonnes of material safely and efficiently handled every day and the carbon benefits of recycling and renewable energy generation.
