Writing ritingabout the "future" Tom hoped that it "might act as s spur to further research, and so bring the hoped-for improvements little nearer." Hernaddressed a range of issues, which we will report onrnhere, with additional comment on his ideas and the realities of wastern50 years on.rnConcerning the storage of refuse, many of the same issues are still present today. Tom wrote: "The storage of refuse in manu of the houses and shops in towns presents difficulties due to lack of storage space. A great number of houses have not suitable space where the ash bin and perhaps an individual kitchen waste container can be stored, even for a short period, without causing a nuisance. It is not likely that these tenements will be replaced for many years to come by houses where this storage is provided.rn"Even today houses are being built without provision being made for hygienic storage of refuse, and the multiple flats of the future will still prevent pre-separation of refuse taking place, unless provision of storage space is made after consultation between the housing authorities and cleansing departments before they are erected.
