I will admit to not knowing which way to turn in the light of recent pronouncements in the energy from waste (EfW) sector. In a relatively short space of time, in the early autumn, we had a report from the CBI making the case for energy from waste closely followed by a statement from the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) that there is a high level of support in Wales for burning non-recyclable waste to create energy. This was followed by the news within the Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR) that seven major PFI projects in England, the majority of which involve thermal technologies, would have their credits withdrawn. Finally, it was reported that after much wrangling Covanta may withdraw from the waste to energy development in Dublin and invest in the British market, which its ceo described as having a "very well-structured regulatory framework" compared to Ireland.
