A UK scheme to generate power from mountain streamsrnhas won a Elm prize from the lottery-funded body,rnNesta, which encourages innovation in alternativernenergy technology in the UK. The Green Valleys projectrnin the Brecon Beacons currently generates power fromrn10 wild mountain streams. Hydro-power normally reliesrnon dams, but the Brecon scheme uses micro-hydro,rnwhich involves diverting up to 50 percent of arnstream's flow into buried pipes, leading to camouflagedrngenerators. The project is planning 40 more of suchrnmicro-power stations and the eventual aim is to makernthe Brecon area a net exporter of electricity.
