In a nutshell, John Carstensen was bom and raised in Denmark and he graduated from the University of Copenhagen with a degree in law. "I specialised in environmental law," he explained, "which had really started to come into play in the early 70s in Denmark, so it was still very much virgin territory and therefore extremely interesting to get into at that time."rnThis led him to the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, where he quickly became involved with the environmental regulation of chemicals and energy, including Denmark's regulations on nuclear power plants. His work on chemical legislation, however, led him on an "international path" and to work with developing countries and their rejection of potentially hazardous chemicals onto their shores.
