With strong leadership from the Government on planning, financing and procurement, the UK could quadruple the proportion of energy it generates from waste by 2015, according to a report from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). The report, Going to Waste: Making the case for energy from waste, has called for the Government to encourage the use of non-recyclable waste to meet the UK's energy needs.rnThe CBI has recommended that the Government recognise the important role that energy from waste (EfW) could play in reducing the UK's landfilled waste, securing energy supplies and increasing the proportion of renewable sources. The report also recommends that the Government should avoid picking "winners" from various EfW suppliers, allowing the market to decide the most cost-effective option, and that it is important to reassure the public that delivering more energy from waste is compatible with high levels of recycling and that new plants are clean and safe.
