DONALD MACKAY, a former director of environmental health and housing in East Kilbride, has died aged 92. Starting working life as a joiner he later joined the Merchant Navy before returning and training as a sanitary inspector. Donald always claimed that he saw an advert in Glasgow City Chambers, went in to enquire and said: "I have half a mind to become a sanitary inspector". 'That's more than enough!" he was told, and thus began an illustrious career.
