The past few years have seen a marked change in the enthusiasm of planning authorities to grant permission for ever-contentious energy from waste (EfW) plants. In February this year the Secretary of State gave the go ahead for a 100000 tonnes per annum (tpa) extension to the Waste Recycling Group's (WRG) Eastcroft plant. Recently, within just 13 weeks of the submission of the planning application, permission was granted for a new fourth and fifth line at SITA's Teesside plant following negotiation with the waste planning authority. In September 2008 Ineos Chlor's new EfW plant, near Runcorn, received consent from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) without an inquiry.
