Cucumbers - after three days, unwrapped cucumbers have lost moisture, become limp and dull and cannot be sold. Shrink-wrapped in just 1.5g of packaging, they will stay fresh for at least 14 days. Bananas - the "modified atmosphere" bag around bananas absorbs the ethylene that speeds ripening, thus extending shelf life by two to three days and preventing the over-ripening of other fruit and vegetables stored nearby. A bag around a bunch of bananas prevents shoppers breaking bunches (leaving single bananas that cannot be sold) or removing labels from the more expensive organic and Fair Trade produce.
