The dramatic decline in the market for recovered materials is the first major effect of the global economic downturn on the waste sector. Reduction in international production capacity may further reduce the long-term demand for recyclate and could have profound impacts for waste management companies, local authorities and the Government. Up until the tragedy of a few years ago the word "tsunami" was not part of the European vocabulary. The disastrous consequences of the tidal waves in the Far East were a graphic example of how a number of events combining together could dramatically magnify the resulting impacts.
