Winning the Olympic bid in 2005 was a bittersweet experience for London. The announcement was made on 6 July 2005, representing a high point in the careers of most of the hard-working members of the bid team in Singapore for the announcement. It was followed the next day by one of the most notorious dates in our recent history: 717 will live long in the memory of Londoners as the date when the spectre of terrorism returned to London.
