The good news in Scotland is that waste sent to landfill has reduced and recycling performance has significantly improved. The less good news is that there is still a lot to do, particularly with food waste. Between 2000 and 2007 the total waste sent to landfill decreased by 34 percent, while the amount of biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) sent to landfill decreased by 28 percent; this latter figure has continued its downward progress since 2007 to well below the 2010 target in the Landfill Directive.
