Between 2004 and 2006, Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) rolled out an integrated package of collections, known as SORT IT, with weekly food waste and recycling collections and fortnightly refuse collections with an optional charge for garden waste collections. SORT IT was introduced to three Somerset districts, serving more than 160000 households. The results revealed refuse volumes were cut by half and recycling rates doubled to 44-49 percent. About a quarter of that was food waste.rnPrompted by public demand and a desire to further increase recycling rates, May Gurney and SWP have carried out trials for SORT IT PLUS since May 2008, adding cardboard and plastic bottles to kerbside recycling collections.
