In 2005 the World Health Organisation (WHO) published the checklist for preparing for the influenza pandemic. The opening pages describe a situation not dissimilar to the current experience with swine flu, more correctly termed pandemic (H1N1) 2009 (renamed by the WHO and other international organisations on 15 June 2009), although the illness caused in individuals is not so severe, and the mortality rate is low for the majority of age groups.rnThe swine flu leaflet was distributed to all households in England, with the "Catch it, Bin it, Kill it" message, during May 2009. At the end of July 2009 new cases were reported to be increasing by about 100000 per week, although this rate does seem to be plateauing out. There was also good guidance on infection control for non-NHS organisations tucked away on the Department of Health's (DH) website under pandemic planning.
