Saturated with legislation, targets, escalating costs and global competition, every sector of the industry is now feeling the pace of change, forcing us all to examine the way we approach our jobs and the decisions we have to take. In this climate we have no alternative but to rethink our approach. The big issues we are now facing include reducing the amount of waste generated at source; quickly providing new infrastructure to comply with the Landfill Directive and different solutions to manage commercial, industrial, construction and demolition wastes; overcoming delays in obtaining planning consents; undertaking detailed and meaningfu consultations with the public over strategic waste management decisions; enhancing the public's perception of us as competent waste managers and giving them confidence that we take our responsibilities to them and the environment seriously; and managing the resource revolution, rather than simply collecting and disposing of waste.
