Luton-based Hain Celestial UK, part of the global Hain Celestial Group, specialises in producing organic and natural food products, supplying around 30m sandwiches each year for Marks and Spencer and producing some 40000 tonnes of waste in the process. The company achieved its award for the remarkable increase in the amount of waste recycled, from just nine percent in November 2006 to nearly 90 percent by the end of 2007. Food waste was first segregated in December 2006 and diverted to Biogen, a biogas plant based in Bedfordshire. The anaerobic digestion process treats the organic waste, producing renewable energy and odourless organic fertiliser, while diverting enough waste from landfill to enable the company to reduce its six compactor lifts per week to just one. Other waste streams - plastic, cardboard, tins and paper - were segregated and baled for recycling and, finally, the compactor was replaced by a small skip so that the residual waste could be analysed and diverted to specialist recyclers.
