Can tins which contain a residue (which has cured/hardened) ot paint or resins for example be deposited in our general waste skips? Currently I treat all such tins as hazardous simply because the tins are labelled as hazardous. Furthermore, if a landfill site comes across an empty tin, how do the operators know it wasn't full at the time of disposal? Secondly, can loose machine metal swarf that has been contaminated with machine coolant be legally deposited in our scrap metal skip? We currently collect the swarf in heavy grade yellow waste sacks, place them in a hopper, make a hole at the lowest point and allow to drain off. Though the quantity drained is minimal we know that the remaining swarf has only a residue left on it and we then place that in the skip. My main concern is that metal contaminated swarf carries an EWC code as hazardous. But, is that related to the quantity of contamination and is my process enough to reduce the quantity of contamination to an acceptable unregulated level?
