Energy from waste (EfW) is the most cost-effective and practical solution for most local authorities' waste management needs.Although recycling rates are increasing rapidly across the country we are still sending more than half of our rubbish to landfill and this cannot continue.EfW is not an alternative to recycling but it is an effective way of diverting residual waste from landfill and generating valuable energy that can be sold to other users or channelled into the National Grid for public use.Our work in the United States has shown us that recycling rates actually increase in the areas where EfW facilities have been built.The critical success factor is implementing effective recycling and waste minimisation initiatives in conjunction with an EfW facility.
