摘要

Sixty-eight percent of municipal solid waste in the UK is biodegradable. Currently this waste is disposed by landfill, combustion, composting or used for biogas production. A novel approach is the production of hydrogen from this waste, which can be used as a fuel for energy generation. Hydrogen gas is seen as the energy carrier of the future. It is renewable, does not produce the "greenhouse" gas CO_2 by combustion, liberates large amounts of energy in combustion and is easily converted to electricity by fuel cells.
