摘要

It's not often that the BBC flagship ten o'clock news leads with a waste-related item, but that was the case when the BBC got hold of a leaked copy of the Waste Strategy consultation document revealing government backing for an increase in waste incineration. The story also featured on the six o'clock news, Radio 2 and Radio 5 Live. The leaked document says: "The government believes that energy from waste can play an increasingly significant role in accommodating those parts of the waste stream currently going to landfill," and suggests the proportion of incinerated waste could rise from nine to 25 percent in the next 15 years. BBC rural affairs correspondent, Tom Heap, reported that government plans revealed in the leaked document could be summed up as: "If you must [create waste] then preferably recycle it, failing that burn it to make electricity and only bury what is left."
