A new study for the European Commission has reported on the extent to which environment criteria are taken into account during public procurement in the EU. The report also identified the best product and service groups to target for "green" public procurement (GPP). This target list included waste disposal and recycling services. Among its recommendations were that member states should consider setting national targets for the uptake of GPP and improve communication across the public sector to promote best practice. The recommendations of the report may have significant future impacts on procurement of waste services, such as the award of waste private finance initiatives in the UK. Public authorities across the EU are estimated to spend 16 percent of EU-wide gross domestic product on procurement.
