Last December a two-year European Union-funded Euro-Asia co-operation project was instigated to help improve solid waste management in the city of Puri on India's east coast. An initial meeting took place last February to access the scope of the project, which is expected to increase the quality and quantity of composting, lead to a reduced reliance on landfill and produce a cleaner, more healthy environment. The joint partnership between Aylesbury Vale District Council in the UK, the Local Union of Communities and Municipalities of the Xanthi District in Greece, the Indian Environment Society in Delhi, the Municipality of Rome in Italy, Puri Municipality in India and the Institute for Sustainable Development in Management of Natural Resources (INARE) in Greece aims to encourage source segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste through the provision of bring-sites, improved collection infrastructure and techniques, home composting and an intensive education campaign to municipality staff, crews, public and businesses in Puri.
