Western Australia, at 2.5m km~2, can swallow the UK about a dozen times. Perth is home to over 70 percent of the state's 1.9m population making Western Australia (WA) an extremely remote, but highly urbanised and beautiful part of the world. Having spent eight years working in the waste management industry based in the southwest of England I escaped, with my partner, to the wide-open spaces of WA. With EU directives a distance memory I was expecting room for landfill sites miles from built-up areas and less pressure on the improvement of recycling or diversion rates. Wrong. There is a thriving composting industry, several established materials recycling facilities (MRFs) and more being built or planned.
