Amajor hospital creates between four and five tonnes of clinical and medical waste a day, with the NHS as a whole generating around 350,000 tonnes per annum. 'Red bag' waste - comprising human tissue, for example - has to be incinerated by law, while 'yellow bag' waste - soiled bandages and other more general waste - can be steam-sterilised at high temperature in an autoclave chamber and deposited in landfill sites. Some larger hospitals have their own on-site incineration facilities, otherwise both categories of waste are collected by specialist companies and transported often hundreds of miles to an incineration or sterilisation centre for decontamination.
