Those charged with caring tor local environments face an arduous task. Quite apart from shifting an estimated 25m tonnes of litter from our open spaces each year, they also have to contend with waste, graffiti, flyposting, dog fouling and abandoned vehicles. And while it is an anti-social element of the populace that cause these prickly problems, that doesn't stop them demanding the very highest standards - and then venting their spleen when they don't see them! But these challenges can seem nothing compared to the difficulties some council street cleaners face when it comes to finding someone to champion their cause. Consequently, while education, social services and housing get the support they deserve, those dealing with local environmental quality are left alone to wade through new legislation, hit increasingly stringent targets and somehow engage their residents in the battle to create sate and pleasant open spaces. Until now, that is.
