Taking ideas developed in an industrially-funded university research project and converting them into useful technology available to the wider community is a notoriously difficult task. More often than not the results of the research are left buried in reports and PhD theses. The reason for this is perhaps due to the incompatible objectives of the two partners: academia chasing research ratings and industry concentrating on core business. This is certainly not the case in the partnership between The Ford Motor Company and Wolfson Electrostatics at Southampton University, whose collaboration has produced a range of novel and practical systems for identifying plastics for recycling.
