Moving any regional waste agenda forward can be a difficult process in terms of judging the future impact of legislation, facility performance and infrastructure requirements. On a region-by-region basis the importance of evaluating existing resources, facilities and capacity through the mapping of private and public sector resources is an important factor in the development of regional waste strategies. Identifying and leveraging existing resources could assist the whole process. Areas where resource mapping can offer significant benefits include: 1. providing an overview of a regional resource base with the potential to reduce downside risk 2. shortened project and implementation times 3. improving the chance to progress within existing strategic, political and financial constraints 4. testing operational, process and market performance 5. testing participation expectations and collection systems 6. improving knowledge 7. reducing political and strategic barriers 8. feeding into the economic development strategy.
